How it works

Where the week comes from

The first hora of any day belongs to that weekday's ruling planet. Each hora after it steps one place along the Chaldean order — Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon — wrapping round as it goes.

Count twenty-four of those steps and you land on the next weekday's lord. Sunday's first hora is the Sun's; twenty-four horas later you reach the Moon's, and the next day is Monday. That relationship is the origin of the seven-day week, and it is one of the assertions in our test suite: if the cycle or its direction were wrong, it could not hold for all seven days.
